The Surgical Coordinator acts as liaison for physicians, facilities and patients regarding scheduling of emergent and elective surgeries and procedures. They are responsible for coordinating surgeon's schedules, OR time and necessary assistants required for the procedure, as well as the acquisition of any specialized surgical equipment/supplies from outside vendors, as requested by the surgeon.

  • Accomplishes individual and team goals and objectives established by supervisor based on prior performance evaluation.
Specific Duties:
  • The Surgical Coordinator meets with potential surgical candidates to review the procedure, pre-admission testing requirements and medical clearances and answer any questions the patient may have regarding the surgery.
  • Appointments are also made for any pre-operative care as specified by their surgeon's protocol.
  • The Surgical Coordinator is responsible for obtaining, as well as any pre-certifications as mandated by each patient's insurance carrier and relaying that information to the surgical facility.
  • The Surgical Coordinator forward all pre-admission testing results to the patient's PCP, cardiologist, etc, so that all clearances are obtained in a timely fashion.
  • The Surgical Coordinator prepares all pre-op and post-op orders for physician review and signature and ensures they are faxed to the surgical site, in addition to H&P's, testing results, (PAT's, diagnostic imaging reports) and clearances.
  • Confirmation calls to the Hospital or Surgery Center will be made approximately one week prior by the Coordinator to ensure all requested documentation has been received and all requested special needs are available.
  • Perform other duties as requested/directed.
Minimum Education, Experience (including licensure), Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must possess basic understanding of medical terminology including, but not limited to medications, diseases and surgical procedures.
  • Must possess exceptional organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Ability to gather data and compile information.
  • Must possess basic computer knowledge and skills.
Contact (Public & Private), Physical Demands, Environment and Working Conditions:
  • Require sitting and standing associated with a normal office environment.
  • Job requires manual dexterity using computer keyboard and/or calculator.
  • Scrubs are required, along with proper shoe wear.  No sandals or flip-flops.
  • Authorized to work in the US without sponsorship
  • Accept a background check to be performed
  • Accept a drug test to be performed
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working as a Surgical Coordinator
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology including, but not limited to medications, diseases and surgical procedures
  • Minimum High School Degree or equivalent
  • Knowledge in: Basic computer knowledge and skills
  • Knowledge in: Microsoft Excel
