Oil Change International is seeking an experienced, organized, and detail-oriented Senior Campaigner within the Africa region. The Senior Campaigner, Africa will research, write, and communicate about energy access topics in Africa, including: oil and gas expansion in Africa, public energy finance and subsidies, particularly for fossil fuels; energy access and distributed renewable energy finance; the nexus between oil, gas and poverty; and additional equity issues relating to fossil fuel production in Africa. The Senior Campaigner, Africa will work with OCI's Africa Director and program team members to determine the most effective writing and communications pieces to support OCI's work in Africa.

The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to campaign successfully on climate, environmental and social justice issues: identifying strategic opportunities, engaging in diverse coalitions, using creative tactics, and inspiring others to join the effort. The Senior Campaigner will develop and execute effective advocacy and communications strategies at an international level in close coordination with partner organizations and our Africa team. If you are passionate about climate justice, adept in engaging with coalitions and partners, and have experience coordinating complex international campaigns, then this is the role for you!

• Oil Change International offers a generous salary and benefits package, including paid health and wellness benefits. We believe everyone needs to restore and recharge, which is why we’ve adopted policies of flexible working arrangements and every other Friday off. We also offer at least two weeks paid vacation, at least 10 paid sick days, 11 flexible holidays, and 8 all-staff holidays. Facilitating, leading and coordinating time bound projects in support of team strategies
  • Develop and provide leadership for campaigns and projects in line with program strategies, coordinating and sharing within the team and across teams as needed
  • Develop clear roles and responsibilities for the campaign or project. 
  • Undertake analysis, communications, and advocacy in order to execute and support projects in the team and across teams
  • Develop and release research and analysis, in coordination with research team where relevant
  • Develop and execute program and campaign related communications, in coordination with comms team where relevant
  • Write articles on the impacts of oil, gas, and coal projects in Africa biodiversity hotspots 
  • Organize periodic evaluations of the project or campaign to assess progress and take advantage of strategic opportunities, and decide when it is time to end the campaign or project.
Strategy and campaign development 
  • Monitor developments in your area of work and identify strategic opportunities for engagement.
  • Develop and implement campaigns based in research, communications and advocacy in support of campaign goals
  • Analyze data on: projected oil and gas expansion in Africa; the volume and impacts of public energy finance flowing from international financial institutions to energy project
Advocacy, strategic communications, partner engagement, coordination
  • Develop and implement strategic communications efforts to amplify and advance campaign efforts. This may include engagement with media, digital campaigning, and more.
  • Write briefings and contribute to reports on energy and fossil fuel issues, particularly in Africa
  • Build coalitions with civil society partners and participate in regular discussions and planning with these partners.
  • Identify and build relationships with other relevant stakeholders.

Administrative
  • Update and maintain quarterly and annual workplan for self.

  • Participate in organization-wide staff meetings.
  • Submit timesheets and expense reports in a timely manner. 
  • Participate in 360 management reviews and be responsive to feedback. 

Experience Requirement and Education
  • 5+ years of experience coordinating an international campaign on a related issue
  • Excellent academic and persuasive writing skills
  • Research experience in energy or environmental issues
  • Demonstrated ability to develop complex campaign strategies and translate them into a clear and understandable written manner
  • Digital and traditional communications experience
  • Previous experience utilizing social media for professional purposes is a plus
  • Strong computer and internet research skills
  • Experience managing international coalitions and working with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Time and project management skills, with ability to shift priorities depending on urgency 
  • Able to effectively work and collaborate with individuals world-wide
  • Commitment to the mission of Oil Change International and passion for social justice
