Oil Change International (OCI) is seeking a Senior Media Officer to coordinate and lead our traditional media work. The focus of this position will be to develop relationships with journalists, get coverage of our work in relevant news outlets, and improve our ability to engage with the media effectively as an organization.
 
Oil Change International has developed a strong reputation for producing cutting-edge, hard-hitting analysis to expose the true costs of fossil fuels and for coupling that analysis with innovative campaigns to shift the narrative and pressure decision-makers to stand up to the fossil fuel industry. 
 
The Senior Media Officer will work with the rest of the Communications Team to help ensure OCI's cutting-edge research, campaigns, and messages reach key targets and audiences in our effort to keep fossil fuels in the ground and address the climate crisis.
 
The ideal candidate will have experience placing stories in major national and international media outlets, developing and managing relationships with reporters, writing and sending press releases, and managing complex projects. The ideal candidate will also have experience working collaboratively in a non-profit setting on climate, environmental, and/or social justice issues.
 
Reports to: Communications Director
Location(s): Primarily virtual / remote work. Candidates must be willing to occasionally work flexible hours to coordinate with colleagues across time zones. Depending on location, several weeks of travel per year may be required to attend meetings, retreats, and conferences on behalf of the organization. 
Type: Full-time (36 hours per week), exempt.
Salary Range: USD 80,000 to 100,000 annual salary.

We have adopted policies of flexible working arrangements and every other Friday off. We offer 5 weeks paid vacation, 10 paid sick days, and appropriate local/regional/religious holidays. We provide regular full-time employees a minimum 12 weeks of paid new parent leave for the care of a newborn, adoption of a child, or foster care placement.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Manage OCI's reporter contact database (Meltwater) and lead efforts to maintain, update, and improve our use of the platform.
  • Work closely with team leads to identify, develop, and strengthen relationships with key journalists and develop new relationships. 
  • Track media hits in a way that allows us to make informed decisions about how to adapt and improve our media work.
  • Field media inquiries to the appropriate issue expert and, when appropriate, speak to the media on behalf of the organization.
  • Prepare talking points for staff and organize media trainings for staff spokespeople.
  • Write and send press releases, media advisories, as needed - particularly in rapid-response situations.
  • Work with the Communications Team to develop a cohesive comms strategy, particularly as it relates to traditional media and reaching our priority audiences.
  • Support the broader efforts and work of the Communications Team as needed.
Required Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities:
  • 5+ years working in a communications-oriented role
  • 3+ years experience pitching journalists and placing stories in North American and/or European media markets
  • Experience managing a press/media database of reporter contacts 
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills; 
  • Strategic communications experience, including: pitching stories to media, writing press releases, and developing other communications materials (emails to supporters, drafting social media materials, writing op-eds, etc.);
  • Commitment to the mission of Oil Change International, passion for advocacy and campaigning, and a collaborative, team-oriented work style;
  • Sensitivity to issues of privilege, class, and race, and dedication to incorporating principles of justice into organizational work and alignment with OCI's values.
Desired Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Experience working internationally; 
  • Experience working at a climate, environment, or social justice oriented non-profit;
  • Experience and comfort with public speaking and ability to train or hire trainers to improve the abilities of others to speak confidently with the media;
  • Advocating on climate and energy justice or other social or environmental justice issues; 
  • Familiarity with climate and energy policy, specifically supply-side fossil fuel policy;
  • Experience working in coalition / coordinating with civil society partners.

  • 5+ years working in a communications-oriented role.
